Snappy Chopper

Pagsta’s Cruisa 250 offers sharp styling and good road manners,
writes Steve Rothwell.

It’s official folks – Australia now has road-registrable bikes that are made in China. Despite years of rolling objections from the Japanese Big Four and epic rounds of ADR red tape, the unstoppable tide of Sino-Bikes has now flooded our shores.

Well, not quite. The flood is but a trickle just yet, but with mighty potential to bring low-cost motorcycling for all – and although some may have ‘unknown quantity’ qualms about these bikes, Chinese factories have been making parts for Japanese bikes for decades now and indeed my ride for today – a Pagsta Cruisa 250 - is powered by the venerable Honda CB250 parallel twin, made under licence.

This engine may have recently disappeared from Honda showrooms, but here it is reborn again in the best tradition of developing-world recycling. And who knows what other worthy mills will be plucked from dormant history? Rumours abound about a re-engineered Kwak Z900, and no doubt many other iconic machines can, with a few emissions tweaks, be brought back to life.

In the Pagsta Cruisa’s case, the old CB-based motor is given an entirely fresh life as centrepiece of a compact yet competent chopper-styled cruiser with rather wilder styling than the mill may be accustomed to. Ostentatiously showy with flaming tank graphics, humped lines and shotgun side-pipes, the Cruisa nonetheless offers a no-nonsense neutral riding position with mid-mounted footpegs and correspondingly decent ground clearance – a rarity in the cruiser class.

The Cruisa’s front brake is surprisingly reassuring, and more than strong enough to tax the yielding front forks – although the rear drum is uninspiring in action. The lightweight bike offers easy stability and manoeuvrability and at speed, answers the helm positively.

In fact, the Cruisa is a decent little package. While being physically small and with a very accessible 660mm seat height, its styling and proportions suggest those of a full-sized bike.

Importantly, the Cruisa is a doddle to ride, with generous ground clearance and surprisingly frisky handling. For these and many other reasons, I see the Cruisa being an ideal mount for the learner or smaller rider. It feels safe, solid and predictable and although its styling is cruiser-chopper, it does not suffer from awkward feet-forward ergonomics or overly limited angles of lean. At just $4995 plus ORC, this is one flamboyant cruiser that makes perfect sense.

Little Boy

Will the fat kid grow up to be a FAT BOY?

So you want a Harley. I mean you really want a Harley, but you’re stuck with the 250cc limit for a year or two and that, from where you’re sitting, means forever. What alternatives do you have? A Yamaha Virago? A Suzuki VL250? Kawasaki’s VN250. Hyosung’s GV250? Umm, all a bit Oriental really. From where you’re sitting. What to do?

Well, until recently, you didn’t have a whole lot of choice if you wanted to be a HOG in waiting. Now, there’s the Pagsta Cruisa. Forget the name for a minute and look at the colour scheme. How many other learner bikes have a flame paintjob? It sends a pretty strong message that you’re not a rider to be messed with. Underneath the paint, which we might add is deep and lustrous, beats a pure-bred heart. Though the cases might say Dady, underneath is pure Honda 250cc parallel-twin, built under licence. And that means parts are only as far away as your Honda dealer.

Roadsta Marvel Upstages Scooters

Article by John Innes, The West Australian.

With many scooters allowed to be used by riders with only a car licence, it was inevitable that someone would produce a motorcycle that could be ridden under the same conditions.

That someone is Alan Lazarus, of Pagsta Australia, and the bike is the Chinese-built 50cc Pagsta Roadsta, one of a range of motorcycles that the Malaga-based company will be importing over the next few months.
